Blair’s Weekly Update 06-21-09

Doc spoke on the evolution of the human species and how it related to running.

Kudos on a job well done at table duty by White Group leader Ivie! The drinks, apples, watermelons, and pastries were perfect after our heated runs. All of the finishing runners really appreciated your generosity and efforts. But, we all missed on our group run!

Thanks to Board member Val for subbing for Maile and assisting Libby on shirt and cap sales. The new HMC visors look great and come in three colors. If not for you, it would make a great gift for others. Cost is $12. Continue reading

Doc’s Talk:

We had an abbreviated talk by Dr. Scaff who mentioned that the Bus Run is all about running on unfamiliar territory; we shouldn’t to get too complacent in our Sunday training over familiar routes.

First Bus Run:
We counted 124 runners who boarded two Robert’s School buses to Maunalua Bay (Hawaii Kai) and the second beach park. Despite a half marathon race going on, everyone showed up on time and boarded the buses in orderly fashion. Thanks to all of you! Special thanks to all who donated more than the bus fare of $2. Sensei Norm took a great group photo of all the participants (see Norm’s report below for photos).

Nelson S’ s Refreshment Stand:
No table duty today but Staff leader Nelson S. took it upon himself to have an ice chest of water and pretzels ready for all of the runners. Nelson S. ran in the half marathon race and finished early so went to purchase the water, ice and pretzels for the bus run participants. The ice cold water and pretzels were very much appreciated after the long run! UDABEST! Thanks for your generosity! Continue reading

Doc’s Talk:

E-centric running was the subject of this morning’s talk – downhill running and the pressure it puts on the legs.

First Bus Run:
Please remember to come out early on Sunday to hear Doc’s talk, at 7:20 a.m. then board the bus promptly @ 7:30 a.m. to head for the various drop off points. Cost is $2 and we will be running on the actual marathon route. This will be a great way to experience and see some of the scenery of the eastern coastline. And, you’ll meet a lot of interesting people on the bus. For most groups, the run back should be approximately 8-10 miles depending on the addition of the Hawaii Kai Loop. Continue reading

Doc’s Talk:

Dr. Scaff talked about the spreading of germs; rather than bathrooms or airplanes, Doc states that more egregious germ locations are our money and computer keyboards.

Table Duty:
Special thanks to Staff Leader and Commander Don of the New Zealand Police Department for all of the fresh fruits, assorted goodies and ice cold Gatorade and water. We all needed your refreshments today; it was HOT!! Thanks mate! Continue reading
