Blair’s Weekly Update 04-26-09

Doc spoke to approximately 200 runners this morning about dehydration. He reiterated that we should take in at least 10 ounces of fluids for every 20 minutes of running.

Dr. Scaff mentions that if there are any specific questions about his talk topics, he is is available to answer your queries. Please email us through the updates and we will pass it on to him for his comments back to you or on the clinic website.

Clinic Picnic on May 3rd and not on the 5th!
Our spring picnic is on May 3rd and not the 5th as previously mentioned. Apologies! There will be lots of great food with great company (us)! What a great way to spend a late Sunday morning after an invigorating run! A guiltless picnic? The four to ten miles that we’ve run should equate to at least a nice sized plate of chili, rice, veggies, okazu (side dishes) and dessert, right? Perhaps even a second helping! Friends and family welcome!!! $1 charge per attendee.

Thank you Norm K. for taking the reins at table duty; the drinks and fruits and pretzels were delicious! [Read more →]

Blair’s Weekly Update 04-19-09

Doc was away this week so Peter gave a short talk on pain relievers (Tylenol, Advil, Aleve, aspirin) and also talked about the upcoming picnic on May 5th (mentioned by Norm Uyeda last week). It should be a lot of fun – it is a potluck event and runners can sign up for various dishes that they would like to bring. Salads and desserts are great choices but if you have that one “dynamite” dish that you want all of us to try, by all means, please bring it. (Liability waivers will be passed out at the picnic – just kidding!) The clinic will provide the chili, rice and drinks! All family members welcome! There is also a $1 charge per member. The picnic takes place right after a group’s run. Coolers with ice are provided to store your food items while members are running. The picnic will be a great way to get to know your fellow runners better. Please sign up on the sheet ASAP.

Special thanks to Advanced Group Leader Les who assumed the table duty role. The cut fruits, pastries, and drinks were delicious! Please take care of your disc problem ASAP so you can continue to lead the Advanced Group through its training. Please take care and hope everything goes well. [Read more →]

Blair’s Weekly Update 04-12-09

Dr. Scaff continued his talk on body temperature and dehydration. My ears perked up when he mentioned that pizza might be a good source of sodium to replenish the salt in sweat that’s lost during a run. Doc have a great trip; see you in two weeks!

Second Shoe Talk this Sunday, April 19th at 9:00 a.m.

As previously mentioned, group leaders, please schedule your runs accordingly. Thank you!

Table Duty:

Kiwi fruit! Rosie A.T. had a great spread for us after we returned from our run. Fresh kiwi fruit, oranges, grapes and mounds of pastries comprised Rosie’s “after run” smorgasbord. Much mahalo, Rosie and to your sister-in-law for the great setup!

Blair’s Weekly Update 04-05-09

There were approximately 150 runners gathered this morning to hear Doc‘s talk about body temperature when running and the need to replenish fluids to prevent dehydration. More about this subject next week.

A short comment (because many have asked):
I generalize or summarize Doc’s talks (with Doc’s permission) because I do not want to miscommunicate or misinterpret what he is stating. So, if you have specific questions about the topics, please let me know so I can relay your questions to Doc. Also, Webmaster Bob promises that the talks will be available soon on podcast from the website. Stay tuned.

Table Duty:
Much thanks to staffer Kozo for the delicious fruits, pretzels, and drinks. Modest Kozo is headed for the “Holy Grail” of marathons in two weeks,  the Boston  Marathon!   Have a great experience, Kozo!!! [Read more →]
