Blair’s Weekly Update 12-14-08

Congratulations! You are all truly special! UDABEST!

After the Marathon Picnic:
Let’s all plan to attend the clinic picnic this Sunday – you can all exchange “war stories”. Keith Y. and I can discuss the “crashed and burnt” result. Or, Les Y. or Ivie can talk about running a near perfect race. How did Joe, Tin, Paris, Marie, Dr. Rob and Donna, and the two Kailua teachers do? And, first timers, we’re anxious to hear all of your stories. After running or walking 26.2 miles (in the rain and hot sun) all reasons (or excuses) are legitimate – that’s my rationale anyway.

The picnic is potluck so please bring your new, never-before-tried concoction (scrumptious I’m sure) or a tried-and-true family recipe. Or, if not sure what to bring, salads and desserts are always needed. The clinic provides drinks and chili and rice so any complements to this would be very welcome. Doc gives his usual “after the marathon talk,” then members can go for a short run, if so inclined. This gives the committee members a chance to set up and get the picnic going at around 9:30 am. Let’s all be there! We all deserve a feast! [Read more →]

Dr. Jack’s “Big Talk”

Dr. Jack’s “Big Talk” – Marathon Week and Race Day
reported by Ro Kyte

The purpose of this talk is to get you through the Marathon. The marathon is in you; you are 100% done with the training [physical part], what is left is 90% psychology and 10% luck. [lucky weather, December can be hot] The Honolulu Marathon date was picked not for the coolest weather but for lowest visitor season. Lucky weather means no rain for wet shoes.

This talk takes you through next Sunday (race day) until noon; the talk the Sunday after that will cover the rest – what to do in the off-season, until the clinic starts up again the second Sunday in March. [Read more →]

As to age, sex or size, it just didn’t matter! [Read more →]

Blair’s Weekly Update 11-30-08

Over 175 runners gathered to hear Dr. Scaff’s next to last talk for the year. Doc re-emphasized tapering and gave some last minute suggestions for the marathon. He also thanked HMC members for volunteering and participating in the Turkey Trot held on Thursday. Doc passed out invitations for the carbo-loading party at his residence on Friday, Dec. 12th – Jeff Galloway, Runner’s World writer and Olympic gold medal winner Frank Shorter to be in attendance.

Thank you Maile for all of the “great stuff” on hand for finishing runners at table duty. [Read more →]
