Blair’s Weekly Update 03-30-08
My foot’s bigger in the afternoon than in the morning? Doc’s talk this morning focused on feet; he mentioned how our feet can change in size based on the time of day and type of activity. Dr. Scaff states that the best time to get a fairly accurate reading on foot size is right after a one hour run – a perfect segue onto our Shoe Talks at the Running Room next Sunday. So next week, after our clinic run, our feet should be “jus’ right” for a shoe fitting (if you were intending to purchase new shoes). By the way, a 20% discount on shoes is offered that day.

Doc spoke to a group of approximately 200 runners today about the “talk test” – making sure that when we run, we are running comfortably and not “maxing out” on our oxygen intake (VO2).

Blair’s Weekly Update 03-16-08
Dr. Scaff’s talk was about the rationale for running an hour at a time three times a week: fast twitch muscle fibers for the first 20 minutes burning carbs, switch to slow twitch muscle fibers with eventual glycogen depletion after about 40 minutes, and endurance and fat burning in the last 20 minutes of the hour. He extolled the virtues of pretzels and Gatorade as carb and electrolyte replacements. Drinking water was emphasized too, of course. He said he would talk about feet next week. He also debunked some myths about antibiotics in the water, etc. (Reported by Rosie Adam-Therem)

Blair’s Weekly Update 03-10-08
Approximately 250+ runners gathered this morning to start the beginning of the 2008 Honolulu Marathon Clinic season. As many of us reconnected with our friends and acquaintances from year’s past, a stream of new faces inundated us and presented us with possibilities of forging new friendships.
Our founder and noted cardiologist Dr. Jack Scaff was welcomed back enthusiastically as he spoke about the history of the clinic and how it’s helped thousands of runners over the past 30+ years. He mentioned that running three times a week, an hour each time, will decrease one’s chances of having a heart attack by 30% – a no-brainer!
